Haven't yet. I have put them on a timer. Come on about 8 and go off about 1am. I plan on picking up another timer for my. T5's. Let them come on at 1 and off around 830 or so. Then I won't have any switches to mess with! (GoodWill $.99) My worst fear was the wireing would get hot or melt but no problem yet. Wires don't even get warm. The string is only drawing 7watts according to the package.

That looks really good, but useing a plastic rain gutter would be easier. you wouldnt have to rip a piece of pvc pipe in half and you can get a 10ft gutter for about $6

The original idea was to use gutter but it not being a prority; it kept getting bumpped to the bottom of the "get list". I had the pvc pipe here and one day it just clicked to use it. As for ripping it; my Step Dad has a HUGE wood/hobby shop that he "plays" in. So the ripping part on my end was no big deal. Also for a budget, the way the DIY I saw had end caps on the gutter. Lowes had the gutter for like $8 but the caps were another $4 bucks each. That was about a month ago. (the last time I had an extra $10 LOL!!!) Just tryin' to get out cheap I guess.

I just ordered a set of 4 24-led strips like this : www.ebay.com/itm/170685899825?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649Hoping the 4 between them will be bright enough to light up my 10g, but if not I may try a single strip on my 29 as a moonlight. I've always planned to do my moonlight as white anyways, since moonlight should have a very similar spectrum to sunlight (less whatever the moon absorbed). I'm hoping this will be a little easier to mount than yoda's. -Rick (the armchair aquarist)

I wish I thought of that. Drilling all those holes was a pain. But worth it!!

I am attempting to do this... yesterday, I bought a 10ft. plastic gutter and christmas lights. I needed a light for my 55 and I thought, why not try out my handy work. HAHA! We'll see how it goes.

My LED's came today! 3 of the 4 worked, I've contacted the seller to see about the 4th. I'm quite pleased with the remaining 3, though. I was driving them with a laptop power supply, which is a little high on the voltage (18.5V vs the spec of 12V). After a few minutes they started getting warmer than I want them, so I'm going to try to hunt up a 12V supply. With the three together, side-by-side, they lit up half of the 29 quite brightly. When I spread them out across the top the whole tank was definately adequately lit. They won't be quite so bright at 12V, but I'm hoping that with 4 of them it will suffice. I'm actually tempted at this point to buy another set and just ask him to send the replacement with them! Pardon the poor pics (no longer my wife's iphone, but my own! Go go free iPhone 3gs) shellbed under 3 overdriven LED strips : rocks under 3 overdriven LED strips : those same 3 overdriven LED strips spread across the tank : That ain't no moonlight! -Rick

If you use a timer for each light set, you don't have to worry about leaving them on or off... Generally I'd let mine overlap by about 30 mins. However I like this one pretty well... I might attempt this one.

I actually attempted and completed this with a plastic rain gutter and it worked out really well EXCEPT... the lights I used weren't bright enough. It's now in the local dump.

What are you guys trying to accomplish? I get 16' LED light strips in blue and clear white. You hook it up to a power box and it lights up great. They are also water proof. Aquatic critter is ordering some for all of their freshwater tanks. 16' is like $20 and box is $20 more. Each box runs 2 16' strips. Strips can be cut.
