This is to help new hobbyist. I just want to run a thread about what type of filtration everyone uses. On my 125 I use 2 eheim 2217, they work great, but I wish they had more water turnover. It filters great and is quiet, but I added powerheads for more circulation. I don't use any carbon and never have. I do maintenance 1 time every 6 months and use Poly fill from walmart as the fine filter pad and don't touch anything else. I spend about $3 a year on filter media.

On my 55 gallon community tank, I have a Rena XP3, an Eheim Ecco 2236 and a sponge filter. I have 5 10 gallon shrimp tanks, each one has an AC20 with sponge prefilter on the intake and each one also has an air driven sponge filter. Having different filters in each tank lets you rotate cleaning so you keep your bacteria happy:)

Do you use the shrimp for food or do you keep them as pets?

I do things a little different. on my tropheus tank which contains 13 - 1 1/2" fish I am running 2 AC70's and a Fluval 305. No carbon in any of them. One with filter floss and sponge filter, the other with bio-media and sponge and the canister with just bio-media. I keep my water temp at 77, Ph 8.6 and hard water. I do water changes every other week. To remove chlorine I use a three stage carbon filter ( sediment, and the other two carbon). I just don't like using chemicals remove chemicals. I keep my nitrates at or below 5. I do the same water treatment with my other tanks and have been doing it this way for years so all I can say is this works for me. I have also used wet/dry filters and like them as well, but sometimes I just like going back to simple setups for a while.
Here is what I use to raise the PH and hardness 1- Epson salt (one tablespoon per-5 gallons), 2 - Baking soda ( 2 teaspoons per-5 gallons), and 3 - saltwater salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons). I test and adjust as needed.

Way tomany to post. On my Geophagus tank, I have a Marineland 530, a whisper 330, and a magnum 350. About 1210 gals per hour. I have about 45 filters in all shapes and sizes. I use sponge filters in most of the small tanks with air. Very efficent.
