So one of my jacks has a small fish stuck in its mouth...its got the tip of tail hanging out but its been like that all day...usually when they eat something they either spit it out or chew on it but he's not trying to do either...we even tried to catch him and gently pull it out and its stuck...I don't want to hurt the jack so we just put it back in the water...now I don't kno what to do...will he eventually eat it? But he can't chew it his mouth is stuck open...

Humm....tough one. My gut says to let nature take its course. But, I see your point of concern. I'd give it til tomorrow and see what the status is then if it were me.

some large cichlids will swim around with feeders for hours before eating peacock bass are known to do it , but if it is stuck i would think it needs removed also you can sedate it w/clove oil but that is beyond my know how remember google search is your friend

If it is truely stuck in there it needs to be removed or the fish will die. If it is just working on swallowing it then it's no big deal.
Were these feeder fish or something else?

I don't know the answer to this--can you lip-hold a jack like a bass? They do have a big mouth. If so, he'd be still while you could work the fish out either with careful fingers or a pair of tweezers, or a hook-out thing for fishing. Just be careful not to rip anything.

What happens is the rosey red got swallowed then extended it's spines and in wedged in. You need to remove it or your jack will die.
On a side not I would recommend you not feed live feeders to any SA/CA cichlids except peacock bass. They are poor nutrition, bring in a ton of parasites and other issues and are not needed for healthy fish.
Hope you are able to get it out!!

What type of feeders would you suggest? I normally just use frozen silversides, but I have been know to throw a hundred rosy in and watch the chase begin.

Frozen silversides are fine. They are clean. What fish are you keeping that need live food though? I feed my culls from my own spawns but they are small and I know they are clean. All I have to do is look at the feeder goldfish, guppy, and rosey red tanks and I know those don't go in my tank. I look at it like this, would I buy a fish from that tank and trust to put it in my tank if it wasn't food? If the answer is no then why would I trust putting it in as food. The only live food I ever use is raised by me. Pellets are better for your fish anyway.

I highly agree with Jgentry. I would never feed any live fish unless they were culls from my own spawns. frozen Silversides mysis shrimp and krill are good but really not necessary unless you are feeding as a treat to meat eating fish. Some of the new pellet foods and flake foods are very good and can be used as staple foods.

yeah this is the first & obviously the last time were messing with live food, we usually feed frozen blood worms as a treat & flakes daily..we got live fish this one time, but none of them really lilked them anyways this minnow had been in there for a few weeks i guess they finally decided to eat him...well attempt to get it out again today...if we cant i dont know what else to do but let nature takes its course

That would explain it!! Catfish are notorious for extending there spines when a fish grabs them. Glad you got it out
