You can start with a 29G. They do get a foot long full grown so you'll want to plan ahead. Thanks--he eats out of our hands. We know he's supposed to get mean but so far he's ok.

I saw one for sale at a pet store in Lawrenceburg last week for $9 and it just crossed my mind that I could have picked him up. This hobby is bad about making you want to impulse buy things... ALLL THHEEE TIIMMEEE. =]

We have probably had more red devils than any other fish. The females seem to be meaner. We had a smaller one that used to bully the other 3 or 4 much bigger ones in the same tank. We named him "Fred". Well.... HE had babies and soon became freda. She was by far meaner than any other red devil we have ever had. Ours would eat from our hands too. In fact... A VERY funny story....
My husband was cleaning algea from the side of their tank. He reached back in to straighten up the decor. One of them thought he was feeding them and latched onto the end of his finger. He pulled back out of instinct and the fish went sailing across the room. The fish was fine but it was SO funny!! So many memories come gushing back when I read other posts about fish.

Since the fish was fine, yes that's funny! How was the husband's finger?

He was laughing so hard I had to get our fish back in water!!! We rinsed him off and let him go back in the tank. He didn't even hide. If only I had a video camera!

I have yet to have something like that happen. But I'd be laughing too I'm sure!

This one's growing so fast. He's a boy--getting a lump on his head. We don't have a girl so there won't be any breeding. Still a pussycat yet.

In my experiences with them, the males are quite a bit more tame than the females. We had about 5 in a 55 long and the smallest was the meanest. We thought it was a boy but she laid eggs. She was the biggest bully..... Only thing worse in my fish keeping was a Pike.
