Why is it all the advice is to not put anything but cichlids with cichlids yet so many fish seem to work with them? And where could a person find a list of what really works with what? He's cool, btw.

You can keep lots of things with cichlids angel. Especially the less aggressive SA ones like in my 220g. Some of the really aggressive CA fish might not due great with some things but a lot of people use non cichlids to add movement to the tank and make there cichlids feel more comfortable. Some other people use them as target fish (something to give there meanies something to chase other then each other).
Just think of all the other non cichlids these fish live with in the wild!!!
Here's a few that a lot of people keep with new world cichlids
silver dollars Giant danios flagtails polyterus datnoids arowanas Lots of different catfish Lots of different loaches
And there are little tons more that can work.

Angel, you get that advice because it is the easy advice. You have to know and try different things to get the experience of what works and what does not. I find most cichlids pay little attention to non-cichlids they don't see as food.

It's funny, too, because there's advice on the web about adding dither fish . But they're not cichlids and they're to go with cichlids. Then the other story of don't put anything else in there. Obviously it can work, and some cichlids don't work that should. Not exactly a one answer fits all, is it?

In this hobby take everyone's advice, but make your own judgement because when it comes to adding new fish- you never know. A great dither fish for Africans are rainbows.

Aquatic critter usually has a great selection of rainbows. They are pretty high priced, but lots to choose from.

It is not a barb but similiar. It is a characin which is the same group as silver dollars and tin foil barbs etc.
