That was my first plan . But he's been in a tank with neons and blood parrot for so long I thought the harder water and Ph might knock him out so he moved in with the chocolates.

I would love to have a Bosemani, but I think my 26 would be overstocked if I added a school of 6.

But you'll be in a bigger tank eventually and then it's rainbow time!

Rainbows are great fish. Highly under appreciated. They get a good size and come in a ton of different colors. There are litteraly hundreds of different ones. They are always active and swim high in the tank. Which works well because almost all cichlids hang out at the bottom of the tank.

I can't remember the kind I have but they're the cheap ones. The kind you can get for $1.99 at PetSmart and $4 at the Critter. But this one is way more cool, and I do love the others too.

But you'll be in a bigger tank eventually and then it's rainbow time! That's true. ;D I'm going to start cleaning out the 29 today and hopefully fill it this week. Liveaquaria recommends a 4-foot tank for Bosemanies. Is this true? Maybe I could find someone willing to trade a 55 for my 29. Wishful thinking?

Lots of the rainbows get a much larger size then people realize. Plus the do best and look best in groups so a 55g would be a minimum for keeping a small group.

Correct and they get to 3" so if you go by gallon per inch of fish rule you could get some into a 29. I have them in a few 55s and they do great. You can get a 55 cheap once it's in your budget just keep watching CL or even here. I got two of them here for $50 each--thanks Nebelhund and Mig!

Most get larger then 3". Boesemani can get 5". I have owned several that got that big and have seen several others that size. Any of the red type rainbows can get close to 6". If you want some for a 29g make sure you pick the correct type for your tank. There are a couple of online sites dedicated to only rainbows that can give you accurate sizes and requirments for keeping each kind. There are plenty that would do fine in a 29g but many of them would not. THey are also long lived fish. I had a pair of red rainbows for close to 9 years. The male was easily 6".

Very good info. Thanks JG and Angel!
I'm a little limited on space being in a 1-bed apartment, and my budget isn't much better. Major investments will be the tank(s), stand(s), and substrate/rocks/live plants. Livestock isn't an issue since there is some length of time between additions. I can also save up money while the nitro cycle is doing its thing.
When I do setup the 29 (it's going to happen eventually... I'm addicted!!!), it will be a community tank and won't be stocked with anything that will be too large at adulthood.
