This doesn't have to do with water quality except heating the water so it might count. I just want it to be known that I hate them. Everything about them. They cost too much. Mine break to easy. They can kill your fish. If you forget to unplug them they could kill you.
Only I have found that hold up(and I'm not convinced about them) are the Rena Smart heater.
Just wanted to vent- I have had three heaters die on me the past couple weeks the last two being made by All-Glass

I agree. They cost way too much. Heck you can probably buy a space heater for your house for the same amount as an aquarium heater. lol

I bought 2 200-watt Marineland Visitherm Stealth heaters for the 55g. The packaging states that they will automatically shut off when the water level gets too low and supposedly shatter-proof being housed in plastic. The temp dial does have degree indicators, so they're not a "set and hope for the best" type.
These also came highly recommended by coworker that has had many aquariums of all types. I found them on eBay for about $25 shipped (each). He also recommends titanium heaters, but those are rather pricey and require a separate thermostat. The combo costs around $80-90!

I have good luck with stealth heaters. None have died yet. My big tank has a jaeger and its working well, 250w and it keeps my tank at 79 (up from about 68 inside temp).
I bought a few of the 250w stealths a few months back online, they were $22 each shipped which was a hell of a good price from what I could find.

I use visi-therm stealths. Marineland recently came out with the Stealth Pro. The new ones have indicator lights! Imo, it was the only thing missing from the original stealths.
