It's actually very difficult. Because the method that's easiest isn't always accurate. But the females tend to have very little black on their dorsal fin--a thin and sometimes broken stripe -- and the males have a nice sized stripe on theirs. Also, males tend to have a black line at their eye. it goes from the top of the socket to the bottom. Females tend to not. However, the sure way would be to flip them over and if their vents look different you have one of each. If they look the same, you have either two males or two females. I haven't tried this yet, but one of these days!!

Thanks angel. I had what I was fairly certain was a male, then I brought three females home (the guy at Aquatic Critter identified them.) Within the first day I noticed one was holding (she just released them yesterday, my first successful breeding Although none of the others are holding yet and I was thinking that mine was actually a female and the one female get pregnant at the store, but the way you describe it he is defiantly a male almost his whole fin is black!!! P.S. Do you want any yellow lab fry? If so would you like to trade? Rico

Sure. I love yellow labs. They're so colorful. And congratulations on your first spawn!
