I currently have 1 male (85% sure of this) and 3 females (100% sure). They haven't bred since I lost one of my females 6 months ago, does any one have any helpful tips?

Frequent water changes, temperature 83-85 degrees, plenty of hiding spots. Some people would tell you to buffer the pH to somewhere in the low 8s but I've found that stability and consistency work better than an up and down fluctuation. I've got three yellow lab babies right now. You may very well could have had them in the past, but gotten eaten by other tank mates (if they exist) before you realized. You may also try re-arranging your decor/hiding spots.

rico, mine got to the point that they would try to breed every water change, while I was changing the water. Check out my video, third down on this link www.musiccitycichlids.com/Site/Videos.htmlIn time they will breed, and once they start that is all they will do.

First time I've seen a Lab male in full breeding colors. Man, he is a beauty.

Guess my guy's looking for some action all the time. He looks like that every day. Wish he'd give me more babies!!

is it common for the female to eat the babies? i finally caught my female and put here in a breeding net. she has been holding for about 16-17 days. her throat is still very puffy however her belly is fat as fat can be. pretty sure she ate a lot of the fry.
i suspect this is her first time. she was rather small when i first got her, i doubt she was old enough to breed.

It happens, but yellow labs are usually pretty good breeders. I would just give her time, if her face is still puffy she is still holding.

she is still breathing like she is holding and her gills are still wide but look how fat she is: she was bare bones a few days ago. bad girl! i know she spit a least one of the fry. i saw one blundering around with a fat egg sack in the tank which is what prompted me to net her.

my girl isn't looking too good. her belly is even bigger today, i assume from eating the fry. her throat isn't swollen at all but now her belly is very large. she hasn't eaten anything in about three weeks now. i'm am not very optimistic she will make it.
i'm just not having any luck lately. in fact this is the worst run of luck i've ever had wish fish. very frustrating.
i still have the one female i got from you jon, maybe i'll have better luck with her.

With a fat belly you're no doubt looking at bloat. Do you have some Clout or Metro to treat?

How does a fish who has been holding and not eating for over 3 weeks get bloat? I'm skeptical however it does seem likely that you are correct. The only thing I can think of is that eating all her fry and all that protein caused it.

Keep an eye on the fish, bloat usually doesn't kill once, just one at a time.

I am, especially since my aulonocara just passed recently. He wasn't displaying any symptoms as far as I could tell.
I am switching to new life spectrum food for a while, cutting out frozen and live food, and putting in a few fasting days as a precaution.
I'm still confused how a fish that hasn't touched food for a long time could get bloat. Everything I have read says the parasite comes through ingesting too much protien or the feces of other fish which if she was holding she shouldn't have done either unless it were from eating her own fry.
