its been a crazy couple of weeks here. this might be a common occurrence for a lot of you but i'm relatively new to spawning and fry so bear with me. in the past two weeks in my 125 hap/peacock regal peacock pair spawned, i didn't have anywhere to put the fry so i put them back in the main tank. doubt any of them made it since then the regal peacock male spawned with a unknown? mixed? female peacock, she is currently holding. i'll put her in a breeder net in a couple of weeks. in my 55 mbuna one female yellow lab has been holding for over two weeks now. i moved her to a breeder net today... she spit a few during the shock but now they are all back in her mouth. the fry are pretty big and her gills are bulging, i doubt she can hold them much longer. one cherry red zebra has been holding for a couple of weeks. i put her in a breeder net a couple of days ago. she has a mouthful but they probably have another week to go. i'm going to need some grow out tanks and breeder nets at this rate! this is so cool.

i picked up a 38 gallon with a tank, hood, and stand on craigslist for $50! its in great shape but i think i scratched the glass cleaning it in a hurry i guess i don't care too much since its really only a grow out tank. i also got a tank divider from the critter. as soon as the female mbunas spit each set of fry are going into half of that tank. i'm pretty excited.

well i struck out 0-3. i was out of town all week last week. i had a friend check on the fish every other day. he said he saw a few dead fry from the zebra and lab one day but that was it. i found what looked like decayed remains in the creases of the nets when i got home.
today i noticed the peacock is no longer holding... all in the bottom creases of the breeder nets i found crushed up fry.
i think the other fish are able to get to the fry and kill them through the nets? it seems like i have read the new fry don't always swim but head for cover wherever they can. it certainly seems the other fish in each tank go for anything they see inside the nets. anyone ever had any experience like this?
my other female yellow lab is holding. i think i'm moving to a quarantine tank with her rather than breeding net in a week or so.

after the last round of fail i have new success to report. my yellow lab in a quarantine tank is still holding and bulging at the seems. i expect her to spit any day now. since then i've notice that my female lithobates, female sunshine peacock, and female albino eureka red peacock are all holding. they were all placed in breeder nets. i've discovered for sure that those cheap plastic and nylon nets are useless for me. the female spits the fry, the fry run for shelter in the corners and creases of the net, the other fish see the fry, think it is food, and pick it to pieces through the net. beware of nylon breeder nets! luckily i caught my female lithobates starting to spit quite early in this process and i was able to save a lot of the fry. finally some success! some pictures: looks like about 3 dozen fry! happy camper here today.
