I know this sounds a little crazy but, how can I achieve subdued lighting without floating plants in a 125g? Thanks for your assistance!!

What are you trying to accomplish? Dim light all day, or just part of the day? I'd think you could get a translucent lens like for fluorescent light, and put that between the bulb and the tank, or maybe try a lower wattage or different color bulb. If it's only part of the day, there are moonlights.

There are colored tubes that slide over fluorescent bulbs. You can get them from That Pet Place or McMaster-Carr Supply Company. I have pieces of black acrylic that I put on top of the back half of the glass canopy. You could also buy some thin Plexiglas from Lowe's and wrap it with the colored food wrap.

Jon, I have a 125gal with two 36" light strips and an extra 48" that I keep in the back of the hood.... Which lights do you reccomend and where to place them?
