My recommendation would be a Fluval FX5.

i did a lot of research and it seems you can't go wrong with an fx5. i like mine so far but i have not yet had to clean it. it moves a lot of water but it doesn't hold as much media as an ehiem the same size. it will cost you about half as much as the eheim, though.
you can find fx5 on ebay for right around $200. add a couple of liters of seachem matrix and some pot scrubbies and you've got a great bio + mechanical filter for less than $250.

I'm running a fluval 405 in my 75 gallon tank and I love it. Man it really moves the water. I also have 2 hydro sponge 4 filters in this tank and they do a great job working together. Can't go wrong with fluval in my opinion. I clean my fluval once per month. I clean the sponge part of the filter and the carbon also, but in tank water of course. I replace the carbon about every 4 months.

I have heard that the fluvals can have a tendancy to leak. I like the Rena XP filters.

I'm with Bunnie. I am a big fan of the Rena XP series. IMO they are easier to deal with than Fluval or Eheim and I've never had an issue with one.

i've never heard such a thing about the fx5. maybe about the 40x series. the fx5 is a completely different design.

I have a 405 that hasn't ever leaked. I had a 105 that did leak.
