I think 14 months without crashing means live rock is a good filter!

Thanks Rich. I, too, love surprises(good ones). It's all so exciting I just can't wait to get started!

Yes I am still running it. I want to upgrade to a LED nano, and I don't know if I would keep both and split the rock up or split the rock up and sell. The only reason I want to go LED is because I am always concerned about the lights going bad and me forgetting to change them out.

The higher light is most important for coral, right? Do the fish and live rock need as much light? I really have no intention of messing with coral at this time . It's the fish that have me mesmerized.

No, they don't need the light. But if you want corals to come out of the live rock they will need it.

I have a coralife fixture and a t5 i guess it is. the ones that sit above the water on stands or get suspended. each are 3ft. one has a blue bulb as well. these are the lights i'd need yes? I've got extra bulbs for them to start too. If the coral appears of course I want to grow it but I don't intend to do a tank dedicated to corals. I AM hoping for a starfish

A t-5 should be more than enough to keep coral alive.

t-5,s are great for most corals, soft, zoes, some lps corals, ocasionally some sps coral. this is what I used too run,it was a48 in 6 bulb ,ive since went to a metal halide/pc ficture, mainly because im putting several sps coral in my tank,Rich on the other hand has a drawf lionfish and needs very little light, this is a beautiful fish that must be handeled with extreme caution!
