They are super sensitive when small. I am not 100% sure what happened, but I have bred them about 10 separate pairs over the past 3 years, and except for twice I usually lose about half. This time they just died. I think they are extremely sensitive to nitrates and what is harmless to most fish kills them. Next time I will put them in clean water with minimal filtration and do daily water changes for first month.

Great.... i hope this is not the fate for mine!
If it was water Quality would they not die before she spit them? or are you stripping the eggs from her? mine are looking really health in her mouth she can hardly hold them in.

they die after she spit. i quit stripping because they cant handle the stress. i then move to a 10g tank. i just breed them for experience for now. i can buy f1s cheaper than the work it takes to grow them out.

If i was you I would let them stay with mom next time you get one to spit.

I have the dad in that tank and he likes to eat them when she spits. I empty a cycled 10g and fill with water from parents tank then when she spits I move fry. They can be raised probably easily with 3 or 4 water changes a week, and maybe a couple other easy measures, but I don't have time. Next batch I will give a bit more effort. I am focused on salvaging the salt water tank now.

what if you move the male instead? alot of people say just moving thing kills them! like before they ever even touch the other water in the tank!

Jon - I know this thread is a few months old but I'm curious if you figured out how to raise up the small frys?
I had one baby fry in my tank when I bought the setup a few weeks ago and it's doing fine. Since then 'someone' spit and I have three new baby fry's ... I can't net them to move them so they are surviving on their own in the big 75 gallon tank. I am thinking when they get older I'll try to net and move them ... does this approach give the fry's a better chance to survive? (leaving in the big tank for a few weeks)
