I have 2M/4F + 5 2" fry (undetermined sex) in my 125 with 3 syno eupturus, 5 clown loaches, and 3 yo yo loaches. Lately my alpha male has been REALLY aggressive...beating up the other male and chasing all the big females (he ignores the little fry). Any suggestions on what I should do to help alleviate it? The biggest male is about 6" and the females are about 4-5". I have some hiding places but now they've gotten to the size where they can't really fit in them. I was wondering if maybe adding a group of peacocks or maybe some kind of Tangs might help, or maybe just removing the other male.

My first thought would be to remove one male. You could also try increasing the number of females but since both males are already established in the tank that may not work. I'd also hate to risk him beating up my new peacocks or whatever you decided to try to add to alleviate the problem. And you have to obviously consider eventual tank overcrowding with those additions as well.

Although I have no idea what helps since mine haven't gotten aggressive yet, are these the parents of the fry? Can they have babies at 5-6"? I wasn't watching for spawning behavior thinking mine were too small and the biggest is at least 7". Hmmm

you probably will have to remove one male. once they start this one will usually die. i have kept fronts for 25 years , and this is the norm more than not. good luck!

Yes Tina, mine have been breeding for about a year now (had them 3-4 years I think? I forget. I think they were 2" in 2007). These were "survivors"...my syno cats are too fat to care about eating fry!
I guess I'll keep watching and probably remove the beta male. Hopefully some of the fry will turn out to be females and that will help, too. Even if we had other fish he would probably still just chase the males. He totally ignores the loaches.

I think mine are 2 yrs old. I'll have to look back at the post of when I got them to be sure. Time runs together.

Joe got them Dec 2009, and they were maybe 2" then. So they're still around 2 yrs old I'd think. So they shouldn't be trying to spawn I'd think. So the loaches won't eat the fry either? That's great if they won't.
