Here is a video of how my filters in my fishroom are set up. I cut a piece of foam the dimensions of the inside of my tank. I make it .5" wider so it will fit snug. On 15 and 20g I put it on the end as shown in video with 1 lift tube. 30g breeders I made foam the entire background and used 2 lift tubes.
So far this set up has worked extremely well for me. At my house, I use the foam as a tank divider and have water dump in on one side, and out drain is on other side, so water has to flow through foam to get to the drain. So I can have 2 sets of breeders in one tank, and bio is handled at the same time.
This is an extremely cheap way to filter an aquarium, and in my opinion way better. Nothing to ever change out, very little power and a ton of surface area.

So all that was sticking down into the pvc tube was an airline?

Yes, I have a blower that runs up to 300 short tanks. I have 250 outlets on it because about half of the tanks have 2 pvc tubes for extra circulation.

I cant wait to get my tanks running off that those filters , soon ,soon... first i need to stock the tanks than i will start working on changing the filteration
