What kind of rocks do you all use in your tanks and were is a good place to buy some rocks? Also I have some large river rock in one of my other tanks that i think would look in my 125 but i don't like the color. I know people paint there 3D backgrounds. So is there a way to have it safe for the fish to paint rocks to a color you want? If so what would be a good color as to bring out the fishes color more?

I've got some rocks I stole from my Mom's retaining wall (these weren't actually in the wall yet). I'm not sure I'd paint rocks, but if you seal them after I don't think it would be unsafe. I've heard krylon fusion is fish-safe after it dries, but that's really intended for painting plastic. What color rock are you looking for?

Check out your local landscaping stores (not the big box stores). Most of the places that sell rocks by the ton also sell them by the lb, too. My husband and I got all of our river rock from a place like that in Huntsville. They are all colors, ranging from red to brown to black and white speckled. All sizes, too.

I agree with Allierw. There is a rock place in Grassland and another one off I-40 W. from Nashville, @ an exit between Charlotte Pike and Newsom Station. Sorry, but I don't remember the name of the exit. It is just off the exit though. If you were to hunt it you would find it. I would think there would be similar locations closer to you though. I have bought many a rock for angel breeding, and for landscape around my pond, from locations just like this.
If you were to decide to follow up on the idea of painting, we would be interested in your experimenting and your outcomes. Please keep us informed if you continue to follow the unnatural adventure. :-)

Many plant nurseries sale all kinds of rock. I have a 75 lb piece of blue Pennsylvania Flagstone in a 75 gl that came from a nursery. For dark gray, try to find slate.

I used everything from my creek (spring ) Slate ,limestone, all dense heavy rocks even the gravel and sand . Cleaned everything well ,let it all sit on a tarp in the sun awhile. I have a 125, 55, and a 30 with various cichlids. Fronts, Comps,Labs, venestus,ob morphs fruscos, calvus, kenyi, and 1 nutty demasoni( periodically he has a temper tantrum or something but most of the time he is fairly social. I like the way it looks and the water stays good so iam cheap and happy with it. I tested the springs I have on my place and they are pretty close to what the fish seems to need , except some salt but that was easy. Havent killed any in about a year and a half . I'll try to send a picture if i can get a good one . I think it looks pretty good.

i love texas holey rock. it looks immaculate when it is clean. but therein lies the problem. two weeks later it looks terrible once it gets an algae film. i used to pull it out and bleach it every few weeks but that became a burden i couldn't live with. i was terrified i would drop it in my tank and crack the glass even with egg crate in the base of my tanks.
i've since abandoned it and now i have a couple hundred pounds of it laying around. i'm all about the lace rock these days.
