They are scale eaters, and they get the scales by nipping at other fish. I do think they are a nice looking fish though. One that even looks more like a frontosa is the Plecodus straeleni but they are even worse scale eaters! where the Trera will pick of a scale now and then the Plecodus straeleni can kill a fish in the mater of hours by eating all his scales. They love to blend in with other fish like frontosa, or trets ,just so they can steal thier scales.... its like ninja fish lol. Also both of these fish are agressive as all get out, even to thier own kind. if you have more than one pair (if you can get them to pair of) they will always be at each other until one is dead! not good fish to keep imo! lol just asking for troubles.

Plecodus straeleni I think if you wanted a kool 6 bar cichlid that looked like a small frontosa the Neolamprologus sexfasciatus would be your best bet.

OK. so, do you have any of the Neolamprologus sexfasciatus ? How big do these guys grow to ?
They are nice looking per the pic. above, that you so kindly posted for me, but I still like the tretacephalus look. Much more blue.
Are the tret's actually that much meaner than all the other Lamp's ? I have had several of the Lamp's in the past and have Lelupi's now and don't notice this scale eating trait.

The picture is of the gold form of Sexfasciatus. There is also blue ones that look like Frontosa. Sexfasciatus are also known as six-barred cichlids and the Tretocephalus are also known as five-barred cichlids. These fish are in the five inch range and both are pretty mean. These things could be called the "Convicts" of African rock dwellers. Nice fish Glen and great pictures!!

I don't think scale-eating is a common trait among lamprologines. I haven't kept trets, but they certainly have a reputation for being pretty nasty, more so when breeding. -Rick (the armchair aquarist)

My 4 trets are about 3" and have been housed in a 15g tank with a daffodil, leleupi, comp, and catfish. They have been together about a year and no deaths or even nips. The Plecodus straeleni is a scale eater, the tret is just a little fish that has to be aggressive to survive. They defend themselves, but I haven't notice mine going on the offensive that much.
I think trets are fine for any community tang tank, especially if you like a frontosa but don't have a big enough tank.

Hum, most hobbiest seem to stay away from these fish because of agression. if you wanted them in a comunity tank I would get 1 once they start breeding you in for it they will pair offf and kill everthing in their way, even other Trets. My 1st run in with these fish were when i was very new to the hobby 14 years ago ,and someone sold me 3 1" trets telling me they were frontosa. as they started to grow i noticed they looked nothing like the other 2 brundi frontosa's I had in the 100gal tank. Once they paired off I had to remove them from the tank, not only did i lose the 3rd tret I also lost my Lelupie, 4 blue hap ahli's ,and 1 hap moorii. I am not sure if this is your 1st time geting the Trets jon, but just wait.... I think they could even whoop some clown afras!
