Ok so It is true that YoYo Loaches are the best way to get Snails out of your cichlid tanks.... I bought one Yoyo loach ,and added him to the tank with the biggest snail population. In about 4 days the tank was Snail free ,and has been now for 1 month.
Now someone needs to get me some more Yoyo loaches lol noone has them here.

I have used Clown Loaches with success, but they can be expensive and they do best in schools as well. I have several in several tanks @ present, and they do preform a decent job of snail control
I have never had any YoYo Loaches. What do they look like ? Do they differ in size or temperment from the Clown Loaches ? What about price ? Small Clowns are around $10 each @ present.

I heard Clowns also eat snails, but not as fast as Yoyo loaches ,also Clown get big ,and as you said "they do better in groups" I went with the Yoyo loach because I think they look really cool ,and are really agressive snail eaters. They dont get no where close to the size of a clown loach ,and grow more slim and longer than the clowns also. Plus I dont have to keep them in groups. 1 per tank is fine. makes me think they are the ant eaters of freshwater fish lol.

What do you keep them with? Can the be kept with mbuna and tangs? Are they a good bottom eater and would they eat fry?

Good web site connection stoney. Interesting how it loaded the item for me when I clicked on it. Thanks for pic also, Glen. I have seen these before, but never had them. If anyone brings any to the swap/meet I may partake, if not then over the winter I may find some and give them a try. Thanks for all the info..

Mbuna might be a little tough on them. Depends on your Mbuna. I have 3 in my Frontosa tank but I wouldn't put them with substrate spawners like n. pulcher or brichardi, or shellies. They would probably eat tiny fry like that. Not sure about Mbuna fry. I have 6 clown loaches, 3 syno eupturus cats, and the 3 yo yos and still managed to have 5 frontosa fry make it without even trying. I definitely wouldn't put them in a tropical tank if you wanted any fry to survive. They will eat shrimp also.

I had a 75 gl that had been taken over by trumpet snails. Threw eight assassin snails in the tank and 4 weeks later the trumpets are gone. I am getting ready to move the assassin snails to their next "feeding grounds".

I have had trumpet snails erupt in my planted tank but I kinda like them. In fact I moved a couple over to my guppy tank in the hopes they will out-compete the pond snails, which I hate. My tropical tanks are the only tanks I ever get snails. I haven't met a cichlid yet (except maybe angels) that doesn't like to eat snails. The only ones that get ignored are the really big mystery snails.

But having to ment snails can give you Cichlids black ink like spots. A few of us had this problem earlier in the yeah. The black blotches don't hurt the fish but they do look ugly

Interesting. I have had ramshorn snails and trumpets for years. Never to rid myself completely of them. I got a dozen assassin snails about a year ago and all the ramshorn in the particular tanks were eaten, but my assassin's have never killed and eaten any of the trumpets , that I can tell. That is why I was so interested in the YoYo Loaches talked about here. My Clown loaches have done a good job eating both snail types in a 135 and 75. But snails remain in many other tanks.

My loach has grown like crazy he has about doubled in size. wish my Altos grew that fast lol.

Thanks so much for the advice ! Looks like I am going to be in the market for several YoYo Loaches, to give them a try. I definately need to find something that reduces my work load, and will eat snails in my tanks.
