If you put catfish with fry, you will have a fat catfish and no fry. I would put them with malawi mouthbrooders because you can separate female before she spits.

I have syn. eupturus. They are fat and lazy and if they eat fry, I've never seen them at it, since I had 5 Front fry survive in my 125g tank. But I agree if you actively want to raise fry, having catfish in the tank is not the way to do it.

if I wanted catfish in my tang tank, I'd go with the dwarf synodontis petricola (I think it may actually be luccipinis?). They will certainly harass your breeding fish though, and if they have an opportunity to scarf some fry they will. They like to live in schools. You may be able to have limited breeding success with them in your tank, but I wouldn't count on lots of fry making it to adulthood. Cyps you'd want to strip anyways in a community tank, likewise any sand-sifters or gobies -- if you don't have many substrate spawners this may be a non-issue for you. A multifasciatus colony might (or might not) be able to fend them off enough for their wee ones to grow to adulthood.

When I had cyps, they were able to spit out in the open and the adults did not eat the fry. They stayed up at the top and nothing else every preyed on them, either. Neat because whenever I tried to catch a holding female she would spit her eggs/fry prematurely.

Bring some of the fry with you to sell. You never know who will want some of them. You might want to bring a pic. of the mature fish so others can see what they will look like when mature. --- Remember, there are some folks who don't talk here much, but mostly read. And there are visitors on here every day, whose names we do not see. There may be a few buyers you are unaware of. I wouldn't bring them all, but who knows what you can move. Good luck.

Which reminds me........ I have placed advertisements about our swap/meet @ The Aquatic Critter, so we may have visitors we have not ever heard of. Hope we will, anyway. ( We have never advertised there before ) The signs have our mcaafish web address on them too, so we'll see if we generate any newcomers to the forum from this. Hope this works out also. Keep your fingers crossed. Only time will tell.
