Ok so I may have found a deal on a 220 gallon with tank, stand, and canopy for $400. My question is would it be possible for 3 Emperor 400's to filter it enough? The tank comes with an undergravel filter and 3 power heads but I have never attempted to use undergravel filtration, so I figured I would stick with what I know. Any advice would be helpful.

what kind of substrate do you plan to use? undergravel is pretty much useless with sand.
with a tank that big i would get a big canister.

Well I was considering using pool filter sand. I am just against using a canister becuase they seem like a lot of trouble to set up and keep up. I may be wrong though.

All depends on your stock. It would be fine if lightly stocked, but if you're going to put monsters in there or heavily stock it with small stuff, I'd add a larger canister.

if you have that many hob filters, the canister will require less maintenance. i have 2 of the biggest emperor on my 125 (which is pretty heavily stocked now) and i've only had to clean my fx5 once in a year. even then it wasn't really that dirty. i find that the hob take the brunt of the mess and those are easy to change filter media.

Well I already have 2 Emperor 400's. I was going to purchase a third one. How much of a canister filter would I need? I know the FX5 is fairly expensive.

If the stand height jives, I'd put a Rena XP4 or larger Eheim.

I have come across a hobyist this evening who has a black wood 55 gallon stand with the doors on the front. No tank. His only tank is a 29 now. He has been a small time hobbyist for a long time, and I have invited him to join our forum. Meantime, if anyone needs a stand this size, he is asking $20 OBO. So let me know if needed. Meantime, we'll wait to see if he joins us.

charden, A cannister filter on that sized tank would be my suggestion also, or maybe even in combination with another filter as well. Fish stock would be one of your biggest considerations

Well it may sound crazy but I was thinking a Hap/Peacock setup with this...I will take the fish from my 55 and put them in there. I plan to re-home all the fish from my 75, keep it and do a planted tank. Or may get rid of it too. I looked at the XP4 and that seems to be a viable option. How hard are canister filters to set up?
