So I picked up my new 125 today and got her goin. Lol I feel like I have worked my tail off. Beginning at 12 I tore down the 75 and moved it to a friends house. At that house I tore down a 30 and set up the 75. Went to LFS and loaded up 125 and stand and got home and set it up! So I have had a good day! ANyways here is a pic of my 125. I know I need some more lace rock but I am a little broke right now. lol I am thinking of removing one of the Emperor 400's and getting a Rena Filstar XP4. Will that and one 400 keep my water fairly clear and enough filtration?

Looking good! Depending on stock level, you could probably get away with the one 400 with the canister. Of course two 400s and the canister would be better. I love the Filstars, except for the bright blue intake tube! You can modify it though with something darker.
At which LFS did you get the tank?

Pet Planet here in Shelbyville. Yeah I was thinking of just one Filstar and a Emperor 400. The XP4 is rated for 265 gallons. WOuld I be fine with the xp3?

I've never had an XP4 but I have a total of 4 XP3s. You would probably be ok with the one 400 and an XP3, but since you're removing a 400, I might go with the XP4 if you have the means. I have two XP3s on my 125 and they do a great job. Combining the HOB with the canister will make that tank crystal clear. You will be very happy.
Never been to Pet Planet, good shop? I've bought a couple tanks at Animal City in Murfreesboro.

Yeah I like them. They havent been open too long but I get some good deals there. They are actually building on to the building next door and it is going to be a fish room. Half of it dedicated to cichlids.
Anyways I am looking at either a XP3 and 1 Emperor 400 or an Xp4 and 1 Emperor 400. I have a Marineland Maxi-Jet 600 in there as a power head. How will the Haps/Peacocks do with that constant flow?

Cool, I will have to check it out next time I'm in that part of the world. Kind of a long way for me but my in laws live in Murfreesboro, so we are down there from time to time.
I have a Hydor Koralia powerhead in my 125 for current. The Haps and Peacocks shouldn't have issue with that at all I wouldn't think.
If you can afford to over filter (i.e. the XP4) I would. It will give you an entire extra basket to fill with either bio media or mechanical media (or both) as the baskets each have a divider in them in case you want to layer media. The XP3 has three baskets, the XP4 has four.

Ah man I am only 20 minutes from the Boro. I have checked out Animal City before but their fish just didnt look healthy to me. Before I found out about Riftfish I was getting most my Cichlids at the Critter. It is an hour drive but was mostly worth it(sometimes) lol

Yeah, I'd never buy fish from Animal City but they frequently have good deals on tanks/combos and some supplies.

filtration is going to depend on how heavily you stock. i have two 400's and a fx5 on my 125. i have about 30 haps and peacocks ranging from 3-6" though.

Well I will probably start out closer to 20 Haps/Peacocks for now. If I decide to go with more I can always add on..lol

FX5 for $215 on amazon. free shipping. I am an eheim guy, but that is just a little more than I paid for my classic 2217. No free media though.

for $230 you can get the fx5 kit with media.
while i like emperor, they are kind of noisy. i've cleaned the impellers, impeller housing, and reseated them all to no avail. with age they are getting louder. my 280's are even louder than the 400s.
also, if you want to go cheap, pot scrubbies make decent biomedia for the price. 5 for $1 at the dollar store.

Emperors can be loud yes. Especially after they have been running for a while and the power is turned off and back on. Good filtration though.

Well I will probably start out closer to 20 Haps/Peacocks for now. If I decide to go with more I can always add on..lol once they hit about 4-5" inches that will be too much bioload for an xp3 and a single emperor 400 in my opinion. you are going to need a lot of biological filtration to handle all that nitrogen cycle. while emperors are good at physical filtration, and you can pack some biomedia in the media trays, they offer no where near the bio filtration of a packed canister filter.
