The following information on how this would work i'm getting from another forum that i'm a part of that has this going on and working pretty well in my opinion. If you have ideas on how to make it better please feel free to let us know.
OK, My idea is to begin this thread for members to post both WANTS and HAVES for fry they are raising or fry they desire to acquire....
The fry are NOT sold, but the shipping and a small nominal fee for packing materials may be charged.... You can only have ONE active WANT and TWO active HAVES at a time.... that way nobody dominates the thread.
YES there are fish that are worth a lot more than another, but this isn't about money, its about spreading the love of cichlids! My guess is this will be more of a place for people who have a spawn they don't have a place to get rid of....
We want to keep the integrity up so no hybrids and no deformed fish please, but everyone will have to trust the sender....
If you like the idea please reply!

I voted no for now, yes in the future. But there is not really anything keeping anyone from trading fry, you would just be giving the classifieds a different name. I think if we get a couple hundred members it would be cool, but now, how many people are breeding enough to have this? I think there would be interest for a couple of weeks, and then our 8 members that keep multiple tanks of the same thing would be over run with fry and the fry club would be maxed out.
I think it would be better to just say, hey, I have 20 fry of whatever, anyone want to trade?

Im also not trying to run people off here, but if you goto the other forum that is running this, its a big thing. So you would have more variety of what you could receive and more people interested in what you have. Maybe it would be better to hold off on this until we do get larger. For now we can keep it internal and if you have a bunch of a certain fry and interested in giving away/trade make a thread. Just remember when it comes to this hobby its not ALWAYS about money. Unless you are people like Jon and Glen who are trying to run a business.

Notice......... I am watching and reading this thread as it grows. I have some comments, but am waiting until all have their say. Your officers have discussed this in the past, and have several ideas pertaining to this very subject. I will share them after all have had a chance to read and comment on this. Everyone please feel free to comment what you think here ! I/we, your officers, are not against this one bit, but we do have suggestions of how to do it. I just want to hear all your ideas first. Please continue to post your votes, comments, thoughts, and ideas !

I voted yes in hopes that something like this would cause the club/forum to grow. I'm not a breeder by any means...don't have the number of tanks, space, wet enough thumb, etc to even get into it. So, I wouldn't really have a dog in the fight if there was a fry club. But if it caused the organization to expand I would be all for it.

As soon as I have fry I'd be hapPy to participate - I'm in this for the fun and sharing my obsession with lake Tang is always fun . I like the idea of a fry club so that I can send someone stuff I have that they want, and someone else who has what I want migh send me some. That way it doesn't have to be 1 for 1 or whatever. I can send fry and get fry even if the person I'm sending to doesn't have what I want -Rick (the armchair aquarist)

Exactly. I do this on another forum and i think its amazing, but with 9 people so far that voted yes it wont work out. Like Jon stated beforr maybe once the club gets bigger this would be better. I would like for it to be for members only also. It would give a person one more reason to join the club

Yeah, it doesn't even have to be "official" though... a well-placed thread in the members-only section when you have fry to give to other members (for the cost of shipping)... if you offer up some fry and just happen to mention what sorts of fry you might be looking for. The first person to do it will be taking a "risk" of giving and never getting, but hey -- whats a bit of altruism between friends? . I had someone from another forum (not the one bnoel mentioned, but the OTHER one with a very similar name) once offer to send me some multies for the cost of shipping, and I hadn't even ever corresponded with them before. If noone else has done it by the time I get fry (I've got a two julies sharing a cave and two of the multies may be cozying up, so I'm hoping for a bit of fishy love sometime next year) I'll kick it off -Rick (the armchair aquarist, who thankfully weathered his ammonia/nitrite spike with minimal losses and still has 4 each of multies and julies)

Just for the record, the hobby is all about the money. Without it, suppliers, importers, and so on would have no reason to continue to supply the hobby with new fish. As for me personally, it is more of a backup plan if my real job falls through. If I were all about the money, I would work more overtime at work, and have my 125 in my bedroom Even swapping fry is something with value for something else with value, otherwise hobbyist would just give fry away. I only bring this up because on some forums act like a profit is evil.
I think the fry club is set up on a nationwide forum. We already are a club, and have a classfied section. When you can trade Mark a tang for a mbuna, you will know it is time to start a fry club.
Otherwise we are like maybe 20 active, members deep that all keep different stuff. Why not try it out in the classifieds, and if it catches on we can give it its own board. Until then it will be just another subboard lost in the other boards.
