I just got back from being in the field for 5 days and 2 of my 8 tanks has brown algea on the rocks/shells. My levels are fine and both tanks have been running for about 6 months. I havent added any new fish in over a month. Its kind of cool looking on my lace rock. Just wondering if i should be worried?

Brian,
I have this brown/diatom algae from time to time. From what I've learned it's caused by high phosphate/silicate levels in the tap water. I tried some of those phosphate absorbing pouches in the filters from time to time and they seemed to work but since it comes and goes I don't do that regularly. I have seen some build up of the stuff in the past few days myself. Don't know if it's the time of year or if the water companies up the levels as the seasons change or what.

I have this sometimes. Sometimes I have the black tuft kind too. Large h20 changes and cleaning it all off usually works, but it does return from time to time. I will need to try those pouches you are talking about David. Where did you buy yours ? What type filter did you place them into ? I am thinking/wondering if they would work if I put them into a simple box filter. How many needed per how many gallons ?

So how many BN would you suggest in a 29g multie tank and a 125g mixed tang tank with some fronts?

I have many BN but have not specifically tried them in a tank with the black beard algae. I'll move a few and try that idea.
Mike, I have excel on hand, but no plants in these 2 tanks @ present that have this brown/black tuft algae. It is in 2 bare bottom tanks with sponge filters and angels. How would you use excel in this case ? Water changes and manual removal only slows it down. It comes back. But only in a few tanks, not all of them.
David, any reason these pouches will not work in a inside box/corner filter ?
And.....are these pouches rechargable ? I remember reading somewhere that something like this could be put into a salt bath and re-charged, but don't remember if this was what I read about or not.
Thanks for the link. It has been a long time since I read on this subject.

1 BRISTLE NOSE WOULD KEEP A 29 CLEAN IF IT IS ATLEAST HALF GROWN, IN A 125 I USE 4 TO 6 ADULTS AND I NEVER HAVE ANY ALGEA

Rick, I don't have a lot of experience with box/corner filters so I'm not sure if they would fit. You might be well served to buy the media separately (it is sold similar to carbon by different manufacturers) and using media bags so you can make them as small as needed. It looks like some brands are rechargable once but after that it's done.

bnoel my breeding pair of bristlenose cleaned my 125 gallon of algae right up........I am thinking that a couple of these guys are a good size to go in a tank with smaller fish........
