Hi, I'm Alan, the new guy on the virtual block. I've not had an aquarium for a few years but I'm getting back in, picking up a new used 72 gal. one tomorrow.

Hi Alan! Have fun with your new tank! What are planning doing with it/putting in there? Beats the heck out of me! I'm open to suggestions. It's been a dozen years since I've had a tank so I qualify as a newcomer. Advice is welcome. I work from a home office and that's where the tank will be, so I can maintain it pretty easily. For those of you that have had both salt water and fresh, is salt water significantly more difficult to maintain? Thanks Alan

It is a bigger investment, and more testing, and I hate mixing my.own water. Fish only is not that bad, then reef is a bit harder. When things spiral out of control, it is harder and more expensive to fix. I would get what you want though.

Like Jon said, the biggest difference is having to mix/make your water. IMO tap water is not acceptable for salt/reef tanks - though some debate this - so you'd have buy or make RO water then mix it with a salt mix. Other than that, most of the same freshwater procedures apply. There are a lot of "toys" out there that aren't necessary with a reef tank. A protein skimmer is a must IMO though.

Alan, Did you get the 72 gallon tank today ? Yes, I did. I need to clean it and set it up. I'll do that over the next few days and let it stabilize, then go get some fish next weekend. I visited Aquatic Critters this evening. What a great place and nice staff. I could have stayed there for a couple hours.
