ok so Im on cichlid-forum's trading post Friday and find 3 geophagus altifrons around 4 inches long for 25 bucks in Bowling green which is 20 minutes from me. I thought they would be a good addition to my 120 gal. I immediately see if they are still for sale and offer the guy 20 to show up at his house and take them that day and save him on the hassle of shipping. he says yes, he will hold them for me but he is busy until Monday. this is fine with me as I take the guy on is word. So today he emails me this
"After researching prices more I had to bump up my price to $24 each or $60 for all three. I've seen 2'' fish go for around $12 and adults for $90+. So three for $60 is incredibly good. I am also selling some marineland filters if you are interested and those are cheap and come with everything."
At this point I'm dumbfounded. Not only did he reneg on the sale but ups the price 200% too and then had the audacity to try and sell me some more crap. I pretty much told him all about himself in my reply e-mail then told him good luck selling his fish. What is wrong with people these days. I was taught that your word is your bond. I kept asking myself what idiot would still do business with this clown. he would have been better off telling me someone offered him more and leave it at that.

Wow fellas, I am having to hold my tongue here. This is a pet peeve or a soap box of mine. I too have been shafted a few times over the years by buyers and sellers on issues just like this. Not often, just a few times, out of several hundred dealings, but enough !
I too was taught your word (and handshake) was your honor and a commitment, and must be lived up to, but folks don't think that way now a days. It's a shame too.
Put it into a broader scale for a moment,... You go to the drive thru @ any given restaurant..... They screw up your order...... Where is the honor of a job well done ? Where is the commitment ? ------ To the company, to the customer, to themselves ? And this happens all to often ! Imagine I come to your home in the Ambulance because you are sick or hurt, and I only do 1/2 of my job.
Peoples lack of commitment, lack of honor, and lack of self esteem has led to a generation of "me" and honor, respect, keeping your word, self respect, etc... is not what it once was. I find it refreshing to meet and see folks like the two of you, who have the self-esteem and honor I was raised with as well. There are still some folks with this, we just have to find them and befriend them. Thank you for commenting.

The is a saying that if someone (or business) does you wrong then tell 10 people and hopefully those 10 people will each tell 10 more and so on ... That way others don't get 'burned' too ... and better yet that person will grow to have the bad reputation they deserve .
So, you did the right thing by telling others on our forumn. Buyer beware.

Well, let me give an opposite story here to even things out a bit!
I found my 72G tank setup on Craigslist last week, called the owner in Murfreesboro on Friday. We talked for a few minutes and came to an agreement on price. He reiterated what was included in the price (exactly what was on his ad) and I told him I would be there on Saturday morning at 9:00. He asked for reassurance that I would show up before he started to drain the tank because he (like most of us) has been burned a few times by people NOT KEEPING THEIR WORD and not showing up. I assured him I felt the same as he does, and that I would definitely be there.
Saturday morning, I showed up on time and the seller took me in his house. The tank was drained and ready to move. He had preserved the filter cartridges in tank water to give me a head start on bacteria. He not only gave me what was enumerated in his ad, he also gave me a bucket of sand, some driftwood, and some food and chemicals, even though he still had two tanks left and was going to pick up a 125G later that day.
He explained all the procedures to me, offered advice, offered to write down his tips, and told me to call him if I had any questions.
That's an example of the good side of this hobby that I've found so far.

I AGREE JESS THERE IS STILL A FEW GOOD ONES OUT THERE. AS MOST OF YOU KNOW I BOUGHT THE TWO OAK OUTFITS IN FRANKLIN TN A FEW WKS AGO AND WHEN I GOT THERE TO PICK THEM UP THE GUY HAD ALREADY BEEN OFFERED OVER TWICE WHAT HE HAD AGREED TO SELL IT TO ME FOR. BUT HE TURNED THE OFFER DOWN AND SOLD IT TO ME. RICK OUR PRES. WAS THERE AND HELPED ME LOAD IT AND HEARD THE GUY TELL ME ABOUT THE OFFER. I TOLD THE GUY THKS AND THAT IF HE EVER WANTS TO GET BACK INTO FISH ALL HE HAS TO DO IS LET ME KNOW AND I WILL MAKE IT A POINT TO FIND HIM THE SIZE TANK HE WANTS AND GET HIM A SUPER DEAL ON IT.

Well in a nice turn of events. I just saw on the Trading Post where he is trying to sell these still but lowered his price back down to 10 dollars a fish. I thought about e-mailing him again but I took the high road.

You should tell him he will have to pay for your gas to go get them

The high road is frequently the best route one can take to reach the ultimate destination. Those who do others wrong and malk the golden rule, often find themselves paying a high price for their attitude, without anyone doing or saying a thing.

"The high road is frequently the best route one can take to reach the ultimate destination." Rick, that is fantastic philosopohy for ALL matters in life. So often we let our egos and hurt feelings show, but being the better person IS the best way. Thanks for saying it.

Glad it hits home. Just hope it does with everybody, since some need to heed this advice more than others. There is always room in ones attitude to be improved upon, my own included. As Mother said, this should be a life time of endeavor for all !
