Do you have the ammolock in there? I'd move more media from the other tank if possible. Sadly it sounds like it's damage control and wait for the cycle to recover time . -Rick (the armchair aquarist)

I put ammolock in before I did the 50% water change. Should I add more? I'm afraid to move more media b/c I might put my other tank into a cycle.

Well it's a good thing I used ammolock before I left for the holiday... I came home to 8.0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 0 nitrate! I went ahead and used the ammolock again, ran out to petsmart and grabbed some store bought bacteria and did a small water change. Hopefully, with the extra bacteria it'll straighten out soon... or I may go CRAZY!

I woke up this morning and my nitrite was through the roof! I did a 20% water change, added more bio, used Amquel, and added more air to the tank. I retested just a little bit ago and it was still really high and the fish are breathing rapidly. I did another 25% water change. I will retest this afternoon. I am also keeping the light off as to not add to the stress.
Any other ideas?

I'm really worried about the nitrites poisoning them... any other ideas?

You are in phase two of the cycle. Hopefully the stuff you have been adding is helping, keep an eye on it. Just try and keep nitrites below the lethal level.

It's at 2 right now... they are looking really stressed. I'm not sure how to get it down other than doing small water changes. Won't the water changes take the cycle longer?

You can always go with Dr Tim's if you're worried, though based on anecdotes I would suspect his stuff is heavier on the ammonia->nitrite bacteria than the nitrite->nitrate bacteria.

Can you move the tangs to other tanks temporarily?

I'm in the process of doing so... I woke up this morning and the cycle started over. I have .5 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate! I was pissed! So, I'm giving up and I'll worry about it another day. LOL

Just finished acclimating and moving the Tangs over to a 29 gallon. They seem much more happy. Phew! I'm exhausted!
