I have always heard everyone in the hobby saying how good of a cleanup crew the BN is. Well until this past weekend i have never had any and got 8 from Thorace and i am a firm believer in these now. I put 1 in my 29g multi tank that had algea on the back glass and in 2 days the 2+" BN took care of all of it. I may never have to scrub algea off the glass ever again. Im going to try and breed these later on once they mature. If you havent tried any i recommend you do.

I LOVE BN ! Got some a few years ago, and just fell for them ! I have several colors now, several different spawns and one or more in almost, if not every tank, that I have set up.
The groups get fresh veggies about once per week, but the tanks with one individual usually only get fresh veggies every few weeks, eating pellets instead. All seem to fair well.
IMO, if you get a spawn, no matter the color, fresh produce is a must for the parents prior to spawning, and a must for the fry.
Remember too, that this type of Pleco, along with many others, need wood in their diet, so provide a piece of drift wood for them to chew on. It helps in their digestion.

IMO, the next best thing would be to buy some veggie sticks or veggie pellet foods that sink, so their diet will consist more of low proteins, unlike what the Africans like.

Your right, I just love the BN too. I have one albino in the Mbuna tank and he is eating on the glass and rocks constantly ... boy does he move fast too.
just bought two black BN for a planted tank and they are all over the driftwood , I didn't know until reading this thread that they liked driftwood so much, so that explains things alot.

I wasn't crazy about the idea of putting driftwood into my tanks either but I found some small mopani pieces on amazon.com for $10. They would be pretty easy to hide.

A small piece of wood is all that is needed. Just something to supplement into their diets. I know many of you are trying to keep your Ph up, and wood tends to bring it back down. But, if you keep the BN Plec's with the Africans, IMHO, I would place a sm. piece of wood under or behind a rock for the BN Plec's. A sm. piece shouldn't screw with your Ph to much, especially if in a larger tank, again IMO.
