A small piece of wood is all that is needed. Just something to supplement into their diets. I know many of you are trying to keep your Ph up, and wood tends to bring it back down. But, if you keep the BN Plec's with the Africans, IMHO, I would place a sm. piece of wood under or behind a rock for the BN Plec's. A sm. piece shouldn't screw with your Ph to much, especially if in a larger tank, again IMO. agreed. this is how i am doing it.

What kind of wood should we use? I'm just curious as I have two BN plecos with no wood...

From what I've read any hard wood is fine. You just want something suitable for the tank. The fish are just using the fibers in the wood to aid in digestion

Lol... can I just go out back and grab some wood? Where should I look for wood at? LOL stupid questions I know but these are things I need to know. Should I boil it first or what?

Wow now you are opening up a whole other debatable topic. all the wood in my sa/ca tank I pulled out of a creek. Small pieces I would definitely boil. some people soak in aquarium salts. Id boil and knock off any debris or bark that you don't want floating around. Then id take fishing line and tie it to the back of a rock because its not going to sink

Just make sure you don't get any sap producing trees or evergreens. Also keep in mind whatever you get might leech tannins into your tank. These aren't harmful to fish at all but most people don't like tea colored water.

Ok... yeah I wouldn't like that but I'm probably only going to do a very small piece. I only have 2 BN in my 75.

Some of the reptile woods from the big box pet storesI think have been dyed to retain color. Soak it for a day then replace the water. If you see the water getting clearer you should be ok. I ended up soaking the same thing some wood we had in a crabitat and it never would clear up the water. I ended up scrapping that idea

Yea, I think that sounds alot easier and safer. I'm too paranoid to just grab a random piece of wood from my backwoods.
