One of my rustys has had trouble adapting since day one. She was nearly done for when I brought her home but then improved. Now she was back to sitting at the top of the water and kind of tipping. She looks horrible! Is this a fungus or disease, or is it the others beating her up again? I've isolated her in another tank, in case it's contageous or there's a chance to save her.

Are all of her fins in good shape?

Her anal fin looks a little tattered to me. You can see the pieces like ragged material in the second picture. That's as bad as it is, though. None are disappearing.

It looks to me like on the one side where the white is that there are scales missing but I couldn't be sure if that's what I'm seeing. My eyes suck!

It seems to me that there isn't enough evidence of others picking on it. In my experiences, cichlids usually make it well known when they are bullying. Either by leaving big bites on their targets or leaving frayed fins. No other tank mates looking rough? I wish you luck, I have had some fish I just knew were gonna die and somehow make it...

Everyone else is healthy and perfect looking so far. And it's pooping and the poop is normal so we can rule out bloat I suppose. Leaning toward fungus?

No I just put in some salt. That should at least be soothing. I hate to medicate when I don't know what it is.

True, can't you put penicillin in the water for fungus? Am I remembering right?

Not sure, but its been acting odd for a few days. It swims when the other one forces it to. Unfortunately I only have the one tank and can not separate. No signs of bites though. We used to have a basket for isolation, I am gonna look for it!

That'd help--at least if there's picking and u don't know it. Keep us posted! I hope it gets better soon. They're so pretty.

We bought them the same day at the same size. The dark one is at least twice the albino's size. My husband put some stress releaser stuff in the water. Hopefully it will make it.

How long have you had them? If one of them reached the age it wants to breed and the other one is the same sex or slower at maturing will the ready one be aggressive?
