Okay, the water is almost at temp and the lfs is almost open(so that I can get the water tested), BUT I have got a wild hair to grab some of my parrot feather from outside and stick in some of these bare boring spots in the tank.
Help!! I could use a few words of wisdom or caution, I've read that I would be introducing bacteria, but could it be detrimental enough to kill? What if I rinse it good first? Suggestions, please.

I dont have any experience putting feathers in a tank. I would think it would eventually break down and rot.

a good rinsing would be good enough, and you would to trim off about 2/3 of the roots. However, Parrot Feather requires pretty strong light to grow in an aquarium (I used to keep it in mine), and in low light, it will die and melt away. I would say try a stem or two......what's the worst thing that could happen? If this is going into an African tank, it might not last too long (snack!).
also, Parrot Feather needs occasional fertilization in the water column, and an iron rich substrate to grow well. Otherwise, it loses its leaves and the stem becomes black as it starts to rot. Let me know if you want more details.

I guess I thought she was putting feathers from her avatar in the water. I am obviously not a plant guy.

joe--that's hilarious! It's funny how we both read that to mean two separate things. I didn't even think about her meaning feathers from a parrot. Looking at her picture, I suppose that she could mean that. Technically, isn't that a cockatiel though? ;-)

I guess you could put the entire parrot/cockatoo in the tank but I bet she'd exit pretty quick
