I did something good for the hobby this holiday season. I had a 55 complete with stands, lights and decorations I had recently upgraded waiting to be turned into a grow out tank. I also could have sold this one so I could use the money for other things. Then I decided that even though I bought most everything I should pay this one forward because the tank was given to me. It was my first tank that helped me to get into this hobby. This holiday season as my Random Act Of Kindness, I decided to give this tank away and help with the setup. I understand jumping into this hobby can be a big undertaking financially as well as the overall learning process. I thought it would be a nice gesture to help with the big ticket items and give a lil knowledge and experience to someone brand new to the hobby. I even loaded it up and drove it to another city. and I'm going to help after Christmas with the initial setup and stocking.
Another Roak me and the GF were committed to this weekend was setting up her dad a 55. He has been down in the dumps for a while after he had to put his dog down and we could tell that something was missing. I gave him an extra filter and heater and we bought some cheap substrate and used all of my old decorations. I was able to stock it with 5 fish from my SA/CA 120 Gallon. I think the look on his face was worth more than the value of my hardware and fish combined. We seemed to have sparked a new interest in the hobby for him as well.
You know I could have sold all of these items and made a couple hundred bucks that I would have blown and had nothing to show for it. I just think the monetary gain does not hold a candle to the satisfaction I received for helping these people out. I challenge everyone here to do something for someone without expecting any sort of reward or payment. Even if its not related to fishkeeping I do think this behavior is good for the soul. What would your Random Act Of Kindness be? I promise it won't hurt. Just try it!!!
