I'm setting up a new/old 29g and a 30g. After I get them fish-ready, I think I'm going to move my four bricchardi daffodils and one Moba to one of those tanks and free up my 70 gallon (that will leave two bristlenose cats and three little featherfin cats in it, movable if necessary). I'm thinking of making the 70 an angelfish tank. It's a tall, corner tank (show tank).
Does anyone have any general recommendations on the angels? My LFS has some very nice medium and large angels in stock. What can I put with them?
Thanks for any advice.

Several club members specialize in angels, i'd check with them for livestock. I'm probably boring, but imho the best looking angels are the plain silver/black stripey ones (I think they just call them "silver"?). Everyone likes the fancy ones (my wife included) but imho a handful of regular angels in a well-planted tank, with a school of cardinals... wow . When I was first re-entering the hobby a number of years back, I was set on a rio-negro biotope aquarium. Then I discovered that my local water was about as hard as rocks, and I stumbled upon these shell-dwelling cichlids from Lake Tanganyika... and the rest is history -Rick (the armchair aquarist, tanganyika nut)

Mike Gibbs does have excellent angels, as do several other people on the forum. I have 56g column with a breeding pair and they are by themselves now. I started out with 4 angels and a ram and the breeding pair were running the others ragged. The only thing they tolerate are plecos, since they stay at the bottom away from their eggs/fry. So be careful if you plan on breeding them.

I have so far purposely avoided buying any known breeding pairs of anything.

Well, they pair up by themselves. I'm not sure how to sex them really. I only raise them to feed to my larger fish.

Angels can grow rather large (6"+) and will eat smaller fish, but at the same time they have long fins and fin nippers tend to pick on them too. So the selection of tank mates has to be considered, as with any group of fish. It all depends on your goals for the tank, ie: plants or no, wood or no, various fish species, etc...
Personally I love Angels and have tank after tank of them. Most of mine are kept either with other Angels or with Rams and BN Pleco's. I have a few tanks with other fish like wild Convicts, Guppies, Kribs., and even a few sm. Africans. But,...Angels remain the mainstay of most tanks in my fish room.
They will grace a tall tank well, and get big enough to watch from across the room, but cannot be kept with Africans, IMO. At least not for very long. A good selection of fish, if you like them.
They will pair on their own if a pair exists, even if you don't try to breed them, but fry will not survive in a community tank, in all likely hood. But, that sounds like your goal anyway, so buy and enjoy, if that is indeed the goal.

If there is anything specific you need to know about Angels, I can try to offer advice, based on my experiences, but I don't know it all. Wish I did, but then there would be no need to continue to talk about them, which I really do enjoy. -- Just let me know. -- I'll offer assistance if I can.

I can't offer any advice on 'other' fish to put in with them ... But I have 7 angles in a planted tank and it was such a pleasure to watch. 5 are super small so they can hide in the plants and nibble on algea on the plants. I only have three algea eaters in with them ... and this is a 29 gallon.
Good luck I'm sure you will love them!

Rumor has it that Santa Claus may be bringing me a gift certificate from Aquatic Critter or Finz-n-Featherz (my LFS), so the angel quest will begin in earnest on Monday or Tuesday, depending on which store said GC comes from (FNF is closed on Mondays).
