Ok so I am thinking of turning my 55 gallon in to a Tang tank. Right now it is planted but with the recent passing of Steve the Stingray I am considering changing the whole tank around. It has half black and and half gravel right now with driftwood and live plants. I am not above changing it all. I have seen some of the nice gobies and compressed* sp cichlids. Even the calvus look cool! So can you fine people point me in the right direction for maybe substrate, rocks, plants or no plants, and what of how many would look good and thrive together?

That's surprising. We're usually ready to spend someone else's money.

Substrate I would go sand. Plants can be a hit or miss with tangs. Since you are talking about some rock dwellers you like either try river rock, lace rock, lava rock or anything else you can stack to get hiding spots and caves. Just to give you an idea of stocking I will be stocking my 72g with 6 white calvus and 3 gobies. I may add another group just not sure yet. I'm just depositing my 2 cents here.

Put any stacked rocks (or anything else you don't want to fall over) directly on the glass bottom. My frontosas, Moba, and pulcher daffodils all think they are excavators. If the substrate will fit in their mouths, they'll move it. The daffodils move one gravel pebble at a time.
