Last summer we got in some beautiful Hap. sp. "All Red". I had ordered "flameback" but got these beauties instead, took me forever to correctly identify them. Most photos I've seen are sub-standard males. These guys were gorgeous, I wish I'd snagged a pair for myself. Attachments:

I started to buy a group of these, then checked with Jason Swanson in MN, he verified with Greg Steeves in TX that the "All Red" IS the Kyoga Flameback! I doubt DNA mapping has been done on both of these fish and until then, all we have are educated guesses from the world experts. There is enough confusion (a nice word encompassing bad info up to outright deception) in the fish world in general and Victorian cichlids specifically! FWIW, I have seen tremendous variation in Kyoga Flamebacks' coloration, my supply came from probably the most reputable source, Dave's Rare Aq Fish, so I am convinced the breed has not stabilised from it's natural hybridisation within the lake. Again, DNA/gene mapping would tell us a lot!

A gorgeous fish indeed! But it is the original poster's fish, not mine.
