oh and one more thing to remember, once someone wins they cant enter again so atleast the same person cant win all the time.

It is why you can't win more than 1 contest per six month period. We are looking to spread the wealth. Next month may be the month. Photography takes time and practice. With the right settings, and eye you can get a pretty good shot with any camera. It helps to have a better lens, but prices on good point and shoots, and used SLR's on craigslist can keep anyone competitive over 6 months of entries. If we get more and more entries we may make it once per year. I have asked to put a review of this contest on the agenda for the meeting, so we can hash it out together. It is meant for fun, but I can see how competitive people can take it serious. If anyone wants to step up their game, ask in the photo section and I am sure you will get some good tips. I will keep my eyes on CL for SLR's and post if I find any good buys. If you want to take consistently great pics, put aside $50 a month until you get about $400 saved up and I am sure we can find a great camera for you. I think they are great for fish, but I use mine for everything. If I didn't have a fish, I would still have a good camera because it is another one of my hobbies. I have way too many!

Agree^ You can buy cameras for decent prices off CL and ebay, from 200-400$ that come with a basic lens. you dont have to go out and buy the BEST. just find one that you can change out lens on ,and but better lens over time.
I blame Jon for me buying My Nikon D70 because I just wanted better photos.... and now i think him for it because everyhting I take photos of looks amazing !! i did not know how much having a decent camera could make everyday photos look so good.... but then there is also learnign how to use the camera! this may take some time lol... still not got it down yet. and i really want a macro lens after using a friends from work..

You know here is my take on the whole situation.
I think everyone that voiced their opinion make great points. I do think it should remain light hearted and fun. I personally don't think you have to have a high end camera to capture a great shot. I am not even concerned that a few folks with really nice outfits get to show off and leave us amateurs in awe at their work. We are the judging panel and there is a 6 month period of wait if you did previously win so it does still level the playing field. (lol don't quit now Brian, you still have a shot!)
I think photos should be judged on creativity, photographic quality, and realism. You can take that once in a lifetime shot on a camera phone or a polaroid and those rare pictures are what peak my interest. For example a shot of a mother with a mouth full of fry spilling out of her mouth would be a great, creative and unique shot. This sort of thing would make me choose that rare shot over one that was taken with a high end camera. However if you want to include every one and make it fun for everyone in the forum a couple of things could be considered
What I do personally take issue with are manipulated and enhanced photos. For example if color saturation is increased or apps like Photoshop and the like are used for colorizing, toning, or enhancing in any way than they do in fact have an unfair advantage. If you tweak an image to the point that it looks like a cartoon then I will not vote for you. Cropping should probably be allowed and maybe red eye removal or a minor fix if applicable to address smudging or maybe something that isn't the focal point of the shot. I think as we grow a couple of categories could be an idea. it would be unrealistic to split it between prices of cameras but maybe an untouched and retouched category could work.
No one will consistently win, as far as I know one person has never won twice. We are the judging panel and this is about the photos, not who can buy the nicest equipment. If everyone keeps this in mind it will be fine. I am proud we are even doing a contest. Anything that gets some activity on the forums is ok in my book. I would love to see more full tank shots and unique pictures and I am sure this will come in the future.

nice write up fuzzy, and I'm with you... i would pic a rare photo over a perfect photo, because capturing a fish with fry free swimming out of her mouth would be so hard to even see,but even harder to catch on camera! lol... I challange someone to try and get one! lol... or a fish fight is good stuff also!

Maybe an idea for the future is making every different. Maybe after this 6 month not to have a 6 month winner and maybe do different photo contests like tank of the month, female photo of the month and whatever else we can think of. The reason why i say female photo is because with all the contests i have seen its always males and its obvious its cause they color up nicer, but there are definetly some amazing looking females out there. One of my favorite female mbuna would be the demasoni. Its just an idea.

I agree. The pic I used I had posted in the forum and someone did some enhancing to it. I however to be fair did not use that photo but used the original which imo was the best pic I have taken. If I don't win I keep trying with different fish or different angles. I am just using a Nikon p100 that was $350 at best buy. Wish I would have looked on Cl now lol.

There are lots of good cameras for sale cheap. Hardcore photography hobbyists do the same with cameras as we do with fish - gotta have the latest, prettiest, most technologically advanced, etc. When they buy this year's hottest camera, the one from two years ago goes up for sale cheap. The technology doesn't get that much advancement in one or two years, so slightly older cameras are just as good and they are relative bargains.
IMO 75% of photography is the person behind the camera; the other 25% is the equipment. Back in the 1970s, Popular Photography magazine used to run articles where they had given top photographers cheap Instamatic cameras and had them take photos. The photos were still great, even with $10 non-adjustable cameras.
One of the keys to great photos is practice. With digital cameras, all you're spending to practice is time. It's not like in the old days with film where you had to buy the film and pay to have it developed. Now you can delete the bad shots and no one will ever know, and they won't cost you a penny.

Very interesting conservation has taken place in this thread about questions that have arisen re: "INTEGRITY", to place a single word to it, IMO. I am not even qualified to speak of I.N. pictures since my digital camera is one of those $100 dollar models with no special lens or features whatsoever, and I am even ignorant as to taking and placing pic's on here anyway. But,...there are sooo many of you that seem to take such beautiful pictures to share with all of us on a frequent and daily basis ! This contest is only in it's 3rd month and we loosely created some guidelines to be followed and we can tweak those guidelines as we go, but it would be a shame if we had to tighten the guidelines into hard, fast, relentless rules, in order to monitor each other, again IMO. For a lack of a better way to say this @ the moment; ----- if you take a picture with whatever kind of camera your personal budget has allowed you to purchase, and you want to upload or download that picture onto our forum, in order for that picture to be a part of the contest, you should not use any forms available to change, moderate, tweak, alter, or enhance that picture. Your entry should be placed on our forum as your camera took the picture, period. This can be the only fair way to play. I realize we are making a contest of this, and competition can bring out the beast in us, but it is our hobby, and our fun, that we are discussing here, so lets not ruin a good thing. We/I expect all to play fair with each other. If that ain't clear enough we can discuss it some more. I have re-read this, and although it sounds harsh and bossy, all of you know I'm right. If the game ain't played fair, it becomes no fun for anybody, and ultimately, we will all lose. Please just think about it. Thank you everyone ! Rick Easterly

BTW,... very, VERY nice entry's this month !!! As always, some beautiful shots !
And,... we can make the contest more specific if enough of you want that; ie: a female month or a male month, or a plant tank month, or a African month and a S.A. month or what ever. We can chat on it @ the business meeting if time permits (there is a lot on our agenda already) and then we will place a poll on the forum and we'll vote so all have a voice. Stay tuned.
