As we all know I have setup a 125 all male hap/peacock tank. Right now I only have 11 fish in there but will be going to pick up 12-15 more in atleast two week or less. Right now I'm running 2 Emp 400 HOB and do two water changes a week with a big 40-50% on Saturday. I know when I overstock this tank, I plan on getting around 30 fish, that my water params with get out of control if I don't stay on top of it. I'm thinking of adding a canister filter to the two HOB, but what's the minimal sized canister should I add? I know the more filtration the better, but at the same time at this point between buying fish, filters and everything else going on in my life I'm not trying to spend money on extras. Just what is needed. If I want to upgrade later then I can. I should also add I have never had a canister before and I plan on buying a Cascade since that is what I can buy with all media and parts locally.

Always assume less GPH than it's rated for. Once you get media in there, it slows the rate down.

How much are you asking? Plus i know zilch about a wet/dry system. Id probably take $250 for it. I have had it less than 4 months. The AC has just the Wet/Dry Sump for $399 not including the return pump.

save your self time and expense. i had a cascade on my 125 and had problems leaking plus water was never super clear. matter of fact i had 2 of the cascades at on time, long story short i bought a fluval fx5 and best thing i could have done. do not cheat on filtration.

I would shoot for six turnovers per hour (6 x 125 gls = 750 gls per hour) between all your filters. With the amount of water changes you are doing, IMO you should be plenty safe!

Hey Rick, I have actually had the opposite experience with this brand. I got a cascade 1200 which is rated up to 150 gallon tank. I believe the flow was 315gallons per hour. This unit was used from saltwater tank and replaced 2 HOBs. I got a great deal on it 70 dollars probably 2 yrs ago and I haven't had a single issue the entire time Ive had it. I love mine and know 2 others that seem to like theirs as well.

See this is what scares me you read so many good and bad reviews on everything. Its makes picking one very hard. I know that i can get all Cascade parts and media here locally so that is a bonus.

Yeah, always the way. If you go with the Cascade, Fluval or Rena size canisters, I would definitely go with the largest GPH you can get from either manufacturer. Don't know that you need something as big as an FX5, but a large canister mixed with the two emperors and your excellent water changing schedule should take good care of your fish. Cascade certainly doesn't have the clout of some of the others, but if that's what you can get, go for it. I have experience with their HOBs and they are decent.

I'm thinking of adding a canister filter to the two HOB, but what's the minimal sized canister should I add? Out of curiosity, are you expecting the canister to help keep your nitrate under control? If using the canister primarily as a biological filter (which I would assume you are) then I'd go for media volume over GPH. GPH is great for mechanical filtration, but isn't nearly as important for biological filtration. -Rick (the armchair aquarist)
