My vote would be definitely. +1 Redundancy is your friend when it comes to filtration. I would also want something other than a canister for mechanical filtration. -Rick (the armchair aquarist)

Agreed. If you had a half dozen fish, it would be one thing. But I always like to have two filters of some description on every show tank. If one goes down, the other one is working until you get the other one back in service. The canister mixed with the two HOBs will be a good combo. I love the mechanical filtration service the Rena filters give. You've got four coarse pads in the bottom and then you add finer floss/media near the top. I keep probably four inches of mechanical media in each of mine between coarse and fine and they still push water like a champ. And you've still got another basket or two (depending on model) for bio media. The XP3 has three baskets, the XP4 has four.

I have had the old style eheim 2217 x2 on my tank at home and nothing else. I know one has been running over 8 years and the other maybe 6. Both are still flawless and cant hear anything when it was right by my bed. I clean about 6/8 months, but I uloose count. This is with 40 ish decent sized tropheus type fish that croak at the thought of nitrates.
If I were recommending one, that would be it. I think it uses like 13w of electricity. But I think everyones point is if you get any decent one, with your other filters and water changes you will be more than fine. I think you could even cut back on water changes. I have killed fish doing large water changes after my wife took shower, did laundry, and dishwasher and I ran out of hot water and wasnt paying attention. If I had only changed 20% they probably would have been fine.

I got some bio balls and some bio rings and i use polyester batting cut to shape and also some fiberfill. You can get those 2 at walmart i get a bag of each and use in all my filters even my emp400 very cheap works great and last me a little over a year....I dont use any other media ......haven't used carbon or bought the filter ready made pads in years...

Eheim 2217 on a 135, working great for years now, but a back up sponge filter. Actually sponge filters in every tank ! Some tanks are just sponge filters. But most of my tanks are just bare bottom breeding tanks. If I had a living room tank it would most definitely have 2 types of filters. I read pro and con to lots of brands. You just gotta go with the best ( most popular) reviews and your gut. Keep us posted of your decision and experience.

Why I hate eheim, the green tubes, spray bar intake. The need it black or dark grey.

One can buy pvc in different colors like white, gray, and black, and adlib a bit. Green is not my favorite color for the tubing either. But it is their trademark, huh ?
