I get my mechanical media at Joann Fabric. I can't find a link to it right now, but you'll know it when you see it. I think it comes in something like a 4 foot X 30 foot roll. It's about $12 and I just cut it to the size needed for my canister trays, Emperor cartridges, etc.

Poly-fil pr quilt padding is a great low cost alternative to filter floss. Just make sure it isn't the flame retardant kind!!! It is a very fine like filter floss which is great for filtering out tiny particles in your water column. it will remove much smaller particles than the sponge alone. The only drawback is that this is a very fine media, it will clog faster than your sponge, so it will need to be replaced regularly. But the plus side is since you are getting it from wal mart or a craft store it will be about 90% cheaper than what the LFS will charge.

Fuzzy makes a good point, the finer floss/batting will clog pretty quickly. I replace mine probably once a month in the HOB/bio wheel filters and they are solid gunk. It lasts much longer in canisters, but still needs to be replaced periodically.

I use pillow batting in open box filters in some of the fry tanks. I even buy and re-build sponge filters when the sponges just simply wear out, from chain hardware paint sections. Works fine and saves bucks. All these products listed, and many more, that are designed for other uses, are great for aquatic applications. I would bet there are many other items many of us use that were not intentionally planned for aquarium use, as well.

Most recently, I found this online store pharmonis.org/ in which I found pillows and blankets with a memory effect, these are the best pillows and blankets in general can not be compared with anything. In general, I am very pleased with the purchase and recommend it to everyone !!!
