So I finally broke down and got a few Lamprologus speciosus ''Black Ocellatus'' I love the lil shell dwellers but I was curious Since I don't know much about the Tanganyikan species. Are there any other type of fish that wont outgrow a 20 gallon tank from this lake that would be a suitable tank mate???

you think those julies would be too big for a 20 gal?

20 long or 20 tall? Honestly, in a 20-tall I'd stick with a single species. In a 20-long, I'd expect one of the smaller julidichromis species to work well. My 29 gallon tank currently houses L. Multifasciatus (also a shell-dweller) and "Julidichromis Transcriptus Gombi" (which I believe to actually be J. marlieri "gombe").
Both species are breeding, and seem to be doing well. I have very well defined territories for each, which I suspect helps them get along.

Well im flexible on the size because I haven't gotten the tank yet. lol I have them in a grow out tank at the moment. The tank Ill get will probably be long though. ill take a look at that species. Most info Ive seen isnt giving me tank size requirements though. ill consult with my old pal google in a few

Other shellies is all i would do. Maybe, a pair of gobys ,or callichromis also? they stay small and dont need alot of swimming room. callichromis like sand though. I would think even a pair of Lelupie, or julies would befine... that just me though, the lelupie like shells also, abit bigger ones though. OH WAIT!!!! i know... get a pair of dwarf compressiceps, called (compressiceps sumbu) they stay small love shells ,and are one of my favorite compressiceps , they cost a bit more though.

I personally wouldn't mix shell-dwelling species in a 20. I definately wouldn't mix leleupi with a shell-dwelling species in a 20 either. I would expect callochromis to be problematic with shellies in a 20 as well. If you can get your gobies pre-paired that might work, but my understanding is they can be pretty brutal during the pairing process, and I wouldn't expect that to work out well in a 20 when they started approaching sexual maturity.

Leleupie can get mean sometimes but the occies will hold thier own even with full grown fish. I just got mine to breed for the 1st time this week!!!! GOLD Occies! so happy. and they are a pair that is in a 30gal holding tank with 10 Julies 2 calvus, and a dickfieldi. I felt bad when i took the fry from teh mom lastnight because she was doing everything she could to keep me from getting them out. she bit me about 10 times. AWESOME fish, one of my favs for sure. Side note. My look on things is if you get young fish all atonce togeather around the same size they will do fine in a tank together. thats just me. I have had people argue with me about this till they are blue in the face. but all i know is what i see, cant always go with what you read lol..

Same would be best. In that sized tank, anything could be problematic. But brevis or multis should be fine. In a 20g its always a dice roll.

I have a few of those. I have never had much of a problem mixing. They tend to be epually as agressive to each other as they are to others.
