I have a 29g tank that until today only had shells and peppered sand. I kept looking at this tank and I loved the fish but the middle and top of the tank just looked so empty. Today I added a fake piece of driftwood to the tank and it made the appearance look a lot better and the multi are actually enjoying and swimming around it quit a bit, but my question is would you had another group to this tank and if so what?

Comps, calvus, julies, or maybe a pair of callochromis? just get them young lol... not sure i don't really follow a law when i stock tanks, and have never had a problem. If i do see something that needs to change then i just move the trouble fish to another tank.
Multies will stay at thier homes gaurding them so as long as you dont get a fish that will eat the multies you should be fine.
most disagree with me.

I wouldn't go callochromis. My 29 houses multies and J. Marlieri "Gombi" (a dwarf marlieri -- I wouldn't try a regular marlieri varient, but transcriptus or whatever the other smaller one is should work fine)
-Rick (the armchair aquarist, who tends to be a bit more conservative, but doesn't have a fishroom full of tanks to move unruly fish to either)

Only think i'm worried about is the multi fry. I know just about anything I put in there will feast on the fry. I'm going to do one of two things. One just grow a huge colony of multi or move the multi to my 20g and get my hands on some Sumbu dwarfs and put them in the 29.

Mulies are really good at gaurding their fry! A calvus might have a shot but not a julie!

It might also help if you keep their territories very distinct. I haven't witnessed any predation, though I suspect if any of the multi fry were silly enough to swim over to the rockpile they'd get snarfed.

Well if i were to put julis in i would need a known pair cause i dont want to put 5-6 in the tank to rehome after pair is formed. On a good note i put a fake piece of driftwood in the tank this weekend and put the shells around it and my multis are loving it. They swim all around it and are now swiming halfway up the tank. One of my males decided he doesnt want a shell anymore and has dug a pit under the driftwood.

Yeah I have plenty of shells in my new shell dweller tank but only one fish I'm assuming the dominant male really guards and stays near a shell. I have rock in the background and several fish have taken up in the crevices there. Mine swim to the top of the tank pretty often I didn't know if this was normal or not

I have 2 julies I need to rehome, but I'm afraid they're not a known pair.

They were sold to me as "transcriptus gombi" but my understanding is that "transcriptus gombi" are actually "marlieri gombe" -- a dwarf marlieri (sized much more similarly to a transcriptus)
