Florida also encourages the harvesting of non-native fish species -- peacock bass in particular. They don't offer a bounty, but in the book with the fishing-license regulations etc. they talk about it -- asking catch-and-release anglers to keep/kill invasive species rather than releasing them.

Snake heads are vicious fish too. I caught one in Southern Fla. once and it was very aggressive and kind of scared the crap out of me. Tried to bite, even on land and hooked. We did not throw it back since I was aware of Florida's desire to get rid of these. There have been several articles written about them in various fish magazines I receive monthly. Saw a story on T.V. once about them too, maybe on Discovery or the Animal Planet channel. Can't remember.
It is said that the Peacock Bass is good eating, and can be caught all day in the brackish canals in Miami, but I have never fished them.
Anybody here ever fish for them ?

back when i was fishing B.A.S.S. we fished alot of lakes in Fla and there is peacock bass & oscars in just about all the canels along the hwys. and in some of the lakes, you can catch oscra like we do blue gills here. any small crank bait will catch both of them. my cousin lives in FT MYERS and he has caught peacocks that weighs 5 to 6 lbs and im sure there is some bigger .

i have not eaten them but i hear the oscar taste like the blue gills. i knew a pet shop owner there in nashville back in the 70`s that had a mated pr of oscars that when they died he weighed them and had them mounted , the female was over 5 lbs and the male was a little less

When bream get really big they don't taste as good as when they're smaller.
-Rick (who has no plans to eat an oscar, but if he ever moves back to florida he might have to go fishing for some and set them up a tank!)

Heck for 200 bucks a pop I'd say we should go fishing. Though I don't know about shoot'n them to kill 'em. I'd say lets just take a butcher knife with us... or a machete.
How hard could it be to get it on the line... reeling it in ... just takes patients.
Now I'm with Rick ... My job said I can transfer to Miami location if I wanted to... haha.
