Just heard on the radio that the Government contacted Amazon and they are required to pay them sales tax dating back to 2004. Amazon is supposedly sending out letters now to everyone that owes them money because its the buyers resposiblility they say to pay the taxes. So if you have bought anything on Amazon since 2004 be ready to receive that letter.

They are sending out emails. I already got one. I'm not paying the anything. It's there responsibility to collect at the time of the order and to the know the laws and regulations.

its a local use tax and its state government not federal. amazon doesn't owe it, you do. amazon is simply informing people what the state has asked which is that you pay use tax. it is not amazon's responsibility to collect the tax, it is actually yours, but sometimes vendors collect the tax for you as a convenience. i got a letter also. it didn't tell me what i owe, just the total of all my purchases, which is what amazon was required to send. www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200909330

I stand corrected, I just read it again and that amount was what I had purchased over the calendar year. How can it be that we have to pay back taxes for something that just changed this year? If we lived in another state, we wouldn't be paying it at all. From what I understand, the reason we are required to pay now is due to having a packing facility in our state. If anyone knows of this, please add any correct information, as I am going on what I have heard, not what I know for sure. So prior to the facility being in TN, why would we have to pay for something that wasn't bought in TN?

i thought the same as you however however apparently that is only for sales tax. amazon made an agreement to defer collecting sales tax until next year as part of the incentive for placing a business presence in TN.
the use tax, which is what is the cause of the letter, has always been in place and applies to all items purchased and shipped to TN, regardless of whether that business has a presence in the state where the purchase was made.
i think they have lost their mind if they want me to pay a tax on something purchased in another state. until there are federal laws on interstate commerce conducted over the internet i'm not paying anything. they'll will have to come take it from me.
