Hey all you Pleco fans:
I was in Kroger last p.m. to pick up food items for work and found green Zucchini and yellow Squash on sale for $1/lb.. It is usually $1.49 to $1.88/lb..
Hasn't been this low in a while. 2 years ago in summer it was $.88/lb.. I reckon it does go down in the warmer months, but not sure how low this year.
It keeps well in the frig. for a couple of weeks, so a good buy to go buy 10 lbs of it now.
Just some food for thought.

I had no idea there were no Kroger's or K Rogers in Chattanooga. Very interesting. I would have thought they would be everywhere.

A friend in Cookeville said she got yellow squash at Aldi, 3 for 69 cents this weekend. I slice, steam and freeze it, pretty funny to see a 4" Theraps carrying one around like a pizza and eating as fast as it can

Price still the same @ Kroger. Must be the summer price. Don't know how Aldi's compares since they are by the pieces and Kro. is by the lb.. Both are better than the winter prices though.
A couple of seasons ago, I tried slicing and whole, then blanching in scalding water, then freezing. When I thawed them they fell apart in no time in the tanks and the Pleco's ignored them, thus they fowled my tanks in no time flat. Scott, you mention steaming them. Please explain your process. When you did this, did your Plec's still go for them ? Did they hold together when they thawed and were put into h20 ?

I'm not a fan either Mike, because I tried blanching in boiling water and freezing a couple of winters back, but when I thawed it and placed it in the tanks, it fell apart rather quickly and the pleco's ignored it. Time, effort, and food was a waste.
Of course my goal was that I wanted to freeze in the Summer to cut costs of double prices for fresh in the Winter @ the grocery store.
Scott said above he steamed it and i want to know if that process is different than blanching or boiling it, weather zucchini, squash or any other veg. for them.

I've tried raw and blanched sweet potato's, and canned cut green beans, with my Pleco's not eagerly going for them during the winter months too. Tried various types of squash from the grocery too, but they seem to be spoiled on fresh halved zucchini and yellow squash as their basic diet, along with dry pellets and left over flakes that reach the bottom of the tank.

I have never been able to get my BNs or now my Clowns to pay attention to zucchini or squash. Is there some sort of wizardry going on here? I have tried blanching, steaming, and just slicing it. They promptly ignored it. My amanos and MTS seemed to like the blanched zuchinni, I left it in overnight tho and it made my water look filthy.

I have numerous Clown Loaches too and they all love these fresh veggies as well. I find it odd that your BN or Clowns go for them. Maybe they just are not familiar. Are you sticking a fork or handle of a spoon into them and sinking them to the bottom ? Or,... are you stabbing the veg's and hanging them down into the water column from the side of the tank ? Or you just throwing the veg's in and allowing them to float ? Mine will all go for the food even if floating, but they are accustom to the foods. All my snails will eventually go for them if the fish don't eat it all and it remains in the tank for over 24 hours. Do be aware I am serving it up raw so a tank is not fouled and turning cloudy for well over 24 hours, which gives them time to eat it all or I can remove it. It may just be conditioning that your fish need.
