I'm buying a large tank with 1 cichlid in it. The owner has raised them for years and said he just stopped replacing them as they started dying off from old age. This one is approx 10". I have no idea what it is. Any help would be great as I'm not sure what I can place him with as it will be a while before I'm ready to set "his" big tank up. I know the photo isn't great, my friend who lives near the seller took it for me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Nimbochromis venustus, it's a common hap that gets to about 11''. One of the first I ever owned. It gets some cool blue highlights when it is in breeding dress. In the wild and sometimes in the aquarium it will play dead until a fish gets close and pop up and eat it.

You can put other large haps/ africans with him, no small ones or you'll be missing a few.

I appreciate it Jon.
Would 5" be too small or would that be a snack for this guy?

No it should work, just keep an eye on them because the Ven. might beat it up. Give the smaller one plenty of places to escape to that the Ven. can't get to.
