I don't have anything other than fans in fishroom. I cut holes on ceiling and ran out roof vent so it is stand alone unit. It works well both ways. Main problem is if it gets humid outside it won't lower humidity lower than that.

But if it was rigged through a HVAC unit, it would correct? At least that's my understanding.

If it goes through hvac, I think hvac takes over when outside humidity is higher. You only need this unit if you have a large amount of water. At my house, my hvac has a built in dehumidifier so it would be a waste on my house.
