Guess who woke this a.m. to find they have no A/C ? US !!!!! I called a repair guy who told me he had several before me all w/o A/C also. We have all blinds closed, all lights off, and every fan running and it is hot in my house right now. Over 80 inside ! And climbing ! The Mrs. and grandkids who are here went swimming and then to someones house to stay cool. Teens have gone to friends houses with A/C. I await the repair guy, who could be all day getting here. UGH !!!

My brother-in-law is in the commercial refrigeration business (walk-in coolers, grocery store cases, etc.). I think he worked all night last night and is up and at it again today. If a unit is going to break down, this is the kind of weather that will make it happen.
On the positive side, Rick, your tank heaters won't have to work very hard today!

Yea, heat ain't an issue today for the little fishys for sure. The house is now 87 degrees on the thermostat and the frig. thermometer. Outside thermometer says it is 107 in the sun on the backporch.

Oh yes, I remember replacing ours back around 2000. Not sure, but have heard that most units last about 15 yrs., so I reckon we better be saving up again.

15 years would be above average for the cheap builder grade crap that put in new homes these days. mine was only 8 years old.

Oh, crap ! Only 8 yrs. Wow. My last one lasted 16 yrs, but had some major issues the last couple of yrs. It was the second one for our house and this one is the third, to date. This is the second repair for this one, and so far I haven't spent more than a few hundred on it, but I know it is limited in life remaining. Mine is a big one too. A 5 ton heat/pump. Is yours a big one too or do you have 2 like many have, 1 for upstairs and 1 for down ? Our house is a ranch style and only has 1 unit.

one level home so I only have a single unit. at least with the new unit I bought something very efficient. my electric bill went down by about 25% and the house always stays cool even on blistering days like last week.

it is a ruud, which is the same as rheem these days. my mother has the same rheem that was installed when the house was build in 1982!
i don't know about the tonnage but i think the seer is 14 or 15.

Mine is a Rheem. Seer is 12. Tonnage is 5. Price was around $5000 some 12 yrs ago or so. I dread to think what another is gonna cost us.
I read that the seer is what will save on electricity. When we bought, I was told it was the best to date, but we didn't see much electric savings then, that I remember.
The Trane brand is a whole lot more money. Anyone got one of these ? Is it really worth more money ?
Ryan, Your mama is sooooo lucky !!!

i've read and heard that rheem / ruud are the most dependable. the trane brand recognition is marketing.
