My 29 gallon started bowing recently, so I finally decided to swap it out with a new one today. I painted the back black (my first experience doing this). I used a flat black latex. It took four coats. Just got the tank swapped out, so waiting on it to clear up so I can see how the paint looks. Takes longer than messing with a background, but much less headache in my opinion. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics. Filling up to check for leaks... Drained and taped for painting... End of first coat. Looked gray going on, but got blacker as it dried... End of fourth coat.. Replaced and awaiting a clear tank...

I like the pic. process David. I too have many of my tanks painted on the back and some on the sides too. I have found I can spray on the cheap Wal Mart spray paint. 2 coats. And it covers pretty well. I have tried their blue and their gloss black. The gloss back gives the tank more depth to the eye, but the blue is less reflective. When I have tried taking some fish pictures over the last week, I find that the black tanks reflect everything in the room including me, and is bad for pictures. I can't decide if the fish are more comfortable with one color over another though. The color may just be in the eye of the beholder.

This tank is against a window and I can still see some light through the black in a few places - regardless of the four coats. So I'm not too happy with that. Plus, I had to scoot the HOB filter to the left a little last night and it scratched the paint all the way down to the glass, so I can see light there too.
You live and learn.

I'd like to know what type of paint might be more durable to this kind of scratching if there is one.

Unknown to me. My spray paint will scratch off too. Black over blue would make for a darker blue though. I will have to remember that.
