I believe this is for safety in the wild.

Wow Roger they are beautiful . I have 1 male acei he is my baby . I accidentally received him instead of a yellow tail. And it was the best mistake he's about 6 inches in length . I've had such a problem adding any other CICHLID to the tank as he's whippy and they tried to go after him. I have him with a yellow tail and they get along well. I want to add more to my tank but have only seen them in the uk . Your pair is gorgeous do you have any babies ? Thanks Jen
