I'm sure some of you have tanks set up in areas where there is no heat or air conditioning, like a basement or garage. How does this work out? Is it just a matter of having a strong enough heater in the tank in the winter, and how does it work in the summer when a garage, in particular, can become very hot?
I'm asking because there is a possibility I'll be moving in the next few months, and a garage or basement could be at my disposal.

It's very cool in our downstairs, and the heaters can't keep up all that well sometimes. The summer it stays naturally cool so it won't be an issue with overheating. Jon will I'm sure tell you about his garage as he does heat/cool it. But the extra space is so nice to have, so I'm sure it can be worked out!

Hope no one one minds, but I'm gonna bump this in hopes someone with garage or basement setups will notice it.

Ok,
Here is my 2 cents.
When I had a basement I tapped into my Heating /AC unit since it was running anyway. This was for coral production. since the upper part of the house would take longer to cool, even with MH lighting I was able to maintain tank temps around 78 degree in the summer and winter with only a few fans and a dehumidifier. Also I was running a night day cycle. Lights on at night when it was cooler and off drying the day when it was hot out. For a garage you have two problems assuming your garage is above ground.
1) in the winter the garage will be cold, by me it gets down to 50 degrees when it is cold out and in the 90's in the summer.
So you will have to insulate and add heating and cooling or take a chance with heating the tanks in the winter and getting chillers in the summer. it would be cheater to add vents from your AC and heating and insulting the area.

Thanks, Joe. Guess that kind of shoots down my idea. I won't be able to heat or cool the basement or garage.

The basement would be better than the garage in my opinion

I do mine in the garage- I went first winter with space heaters, then i ran my a/c unit out there and it seems to work well. I need more insulation.
